Days Out - The Deep
The Deep - the world’s only submarium - is Hull’s £53 million Millennium Commission lottery project. Since opening its doors in March 2002 it has welcomed over 2 million visitors and in March this year opened a £6.8 million extension called The Twilight Zone.Focusing on creatures found in the deep sea, it is home to animals such as the Giant Pacific Octopus, Giant Japanese Spider Crabs, the fierce looking Wolf Eels and the otherworldly ancient Nautilus. The Twilight Zone forms part of the existing award winning attraction, which aims to tell the story of the world’s oceans by using a unique combination of live aquaria, and hands on interactives. Visitors journey through time, beginning with the Big Bang, through the creation of life into the present day and ending in a deep sea research station in the year 2042. Home to over 3000 fish and 40 sharks including Europe’s only pair of Green Sawfish - nicknamed half shark, half chainsaw due to their long toothy snouts - and a spectacular ride through the main tank in a glass lift - bringing you face to face with sharks, rays and hundreds of beautiful fish. The Deep is open every day from 10 till 6pm (last entry at 5pm).
